Modern Minimalist home in Palo Alto, 2017
All corners, that’s my take on this large residence in Palo Alto.
Most new homes in Palo Alto are much larger than the home they replace; many are two story with a full basement. And, a popular style is a modern minimalism, quite distinct from the Mediterranean and Craftsman styles used by builders in the 30s and post-war eras when much of Palo Alto was built.
Here is a photo gallery of a few new homes in Old Palo Alto that are a within a few blocks of my one-story Tudor style home of the 30s.

I do like the modern minimalistic look of the buildings–kinda Frank Lloyd Wright-ish. But I don’t like huge–not necessary.
I’ve seen a few modern homes built like these here in Australia, and went into one to have a look. They are actually small, but it seems that the owners are neat and choose to live only with essentials. The ones you showed in your photos seem much, much bigger.
They are large by most standards, 8,000 sq ft and more. All have large basements, 2,000 sq ft +. A lot of house; I’d be lost in one.
Interesting Carto – I wonder 50 years from now which style will prevail 🙂
Interesting. I was reading some chat posts where collectors were speculating weather or not the pop media driven interest in Mid-Century Modern had peaked and was now on the decline.
Housing starts seem to lag behind design trends by about..what, 10 years or so?
And that generalized statement is not backed by anything other than my personal experience.
